2017 Road Resurfacing

Roads must be resurfaced periodically in order to maintain them (fix cracks, wear, potholes, etc.).  During this process, the entire roadway is stripped of all of its striping, a new layer of asphalt is applied, and stripes are reapplied to direct traffic movement.

This is a opportune time to redesign the street to better accommodate different transportation modes (pedestrian, car, bicycle, transit).  While changing the road width is beyond the scope of resurfacing, a road diet can sometimes make a street safer for all transportation modes and is easily implemented after resurfacing.  Our Complete Streets Ordinance not only affirms the City’s intention to make our street network multimodal, but also specifically mentions resurfacing as a cost-effective time to implement Complete Streets. This is such an opportune time, in fact, that an entire FHWA guidebook is dedicated to installing bike lanes during road resurfacing.

Below are the remaining resurfacing projects for 2017 and BikePed Coordinator recommendations for them regarding the installation of sharrows or bike lanes (Figs. 1-4).  Wards are not equally represented because this is only the 2017 subset of the 2016-2018 Sales Tax and Bond resurfacing projects.  These recommendations are not policy.  If you approve or disapprove of a specific recommendation, please contact me jlandosky@litterock.gov and/or PublicWorks@littlerock.gov and make your voice heard.  If you would like a rationale for a specific recommendation, please contact me jlandosky@littlerock.gov.
