Little Rock Makes Winter Weather Preparations)

Four Warming Centers to Open

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (December 16, 2016) – The City of Little Rock is preparing for a cold front forecast to come into central Arkansas beginning Friday night, including opening four warming centers. 

“We have been monitoring the forecast, and with the wind chill dropping to below freezing, we made the call to have our four designated warming centers open,” City Manager Bruce T. Moore said. “We also urge residents to stop in and check on their elderly or disabled neighbors to make sure they are safe and warm during this time as well.” 

The four warming centers and their locations/hours of operation are:

 

Dunbar Community Center

In addition to the warming centers, other City departments are getting ready for the cold snap. Public Works Operations will have the full night shift crew on standby for Saturday night, while the day shift crews will be on standby for Sunday. Parks and Recreation spent Friday covering the greens at War Memorial Golf Course, Hindman Golf Course and Rebsamen’s 18 Hole Championship Golf Course.

Residents are advised to always have non-perishable food items, bottled fresh water and batteries on hand in preparation for emergency events like severe weather. 

The Little Rock Fire Department will be helping the nonprofit Reach Out during its 12th Annual Christmas Caravan taking place Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Clinton Presidential Library parking lot. Breakfast will be served at 7 a.m., with the caravan coming in at 8 a.m. to distribute clothing, blankets, toiletries and other items to homeless and low-income residents.

The Salvation Army at 1111 W. Markham St. also operates a warming shelter when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. Call 374-9296 for hours of availability.
