Terms & Definitions
Diversity
Refers to the variety of similarities and differences among people, for example: Age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, culture, beliefs, marital status, parental status, education level, socioeconomic status, thinking style, etc.
Equity
Means ensuring access to resources and opportunities for all.
- Promotes fairness by meeting people where they are (treating people differently based on need and circumstance).
- Requires deliberate actions to remove systemic, group, and individual barriers to opportunity.
- Achieved through the identification and elimination of policies, practices, attitudes, and cultural messages that create and reinforce unfair outcomes.
Inclusion
Happens when diversity is leveraged and valued to create a fair, healthy, and high-performing environment that enables people to feel safe, respected, heard, engaged, motivated, and valued for who they are.
