Cold Case Investigations
The Cold Case Unit was born out of a desire to provide hope to families of unsolved homicide victims or missing persons. Cases go cold for many reasons, but the fact remains that once a case goes cold, hope diminishes. Even though, in many cases, all the investigator needs is for one witness to come forward and provide information. In 2017, the Little Rock Police Department initiated the unit in an effort to reduce the number of open investigations. The unit is comprised of retired Little Rock Police Officers who have numerous years of investigative experience and they help to supplement the existing group of investigators. These retired officers are tasked with reviewing cold case files in an attempt to solve them by using modern science and investigative techniques.
What Exactly Is a "Code Case"?
A “Cold Case Homicide” shall be defined as a homicide case that generally cannot be linked to a suspect, has no remaining investigative leads, no additional physical evidence to collect and/or process, and at the present time does not yield forensic identification of a suspect. Homicides are the most common types of cases worked by the cold case investigators as there is no statute of limitations on when a person can be charged for committing this type of crime. Cold case investigators also investigate missing persons who have been missing for an extended period of time, and are considered to be “cold cases.”
