OIS: December 2023)

On Monday December 11, 2023, at 3:01 p.m., Emergency Communications dispatched southwest patrol officers to a shots fired call for service at 8219 I-30 at the Days Inn motel. Emergency Communications informed officers that the caller said 4 to 5 shots had been fired on the property and believed the person responsible was wearing a black sweatshirt and pants and drove a silver Chevy SUV. The same caller also advised the subject, believed to be the shooter, left in the SUV but there was a second person seen running on the back side of the building with a gun in his hand. It was later determined the SUV was not involved with the incident.

At 3:02 another call came into emergency communications providing similar suspect information but informed the call-taker the suspect had shot into a hotel room, which was later determined to be room #110 but there were no victims.

Shortly after, the two officers arrived on scene and located a subject matching the description of the suspect on the east side of the Rest Inn motel, located at 8217 Interstate-30, next to the Days Inn. The suspect was ordered several times to put down the weapon but refused to comply with the officers' commands which resulted in shots fired by one officer. The suspect, 38-year-old Michael Johnson of Little Rock, was critically injured and later died at a local hospital.

This is an ongoing investigation and since this incident involved an officer discharging a service weapon, an internal investigation has begun. A separate criminal investigation is also underway. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
